The Act specifies the standards and procedures for sustainable waste management and governs the implementation and enforcement of practices and regulations designed to reduce the harmful effects of waste and safeguard public health.
The law’s objectives include decreasing waste-related environmental pollution and health risks to the general public, minimizing waste, and promoting waste recycling and reuse.
The act also provides a mechanism to reduce single-use plastics (SUPs).
Under the Act, a fee of MVR 2 is to be charged for plastic bags except in the following circumstances.
(1) Plastic bags sold or supplied by duty-free shops.
(2) Unsealed bags used for fresh meat.
(3) “Bin liner” sold exclusively for waste disposal by waste management service providers or by other relevant agencies.
A fine of up to MVR 5 million may be incurred for illegally importing waste or exporting hazardous waste.
A waste reduction strategy is to be developed within 12-months from the commencement of the Act.
