The first amendment to Maldives Water and Sewerage Act [Law no. 8/2020] was enacted on May 10, 2022.

Two subsections have been added to Section 11, which calls for quality assurance procedures and consultation with experts when developing water and sewerage systems. 

Section 54 of the legislation has also been amended to include subsections that provide authorities the power to fine contractors from a range of MVR 5,000 to MVR 1 million, if they fail to adhere to the standards stipulated in the law.

The amendment adds a number of quality control mechanisms to the law by reorganising several sections of the Act.
