Maldives Enacts International Trade Controls on Endangered Species Act [Law No. 13/2022]
Maldives enacted the International Trade Controls on Endangered Species Act (Law no. 13/2022) on 20 July, 2022. The primary objective of this Act is to implement the “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora” (CITES), which Maldives has been party to since 2013.
The Act establishes procedures for trade and transfer of species and their parts, and also guarantees protection from unsustainable international trade, which would result in their endangerment and exploitation.
The Maldives is committed to the conservation of biodiversity and this Act will contribute significantly towards sustainable management of natural resources in the Maldives.
