Maldives ratifies Chemical Weapons Prohibition Act [Law no. 22/2022]
On 18th December 2022, Maldives ratified the Chemical Weapons Prohibition Act (Law no. 22/2022).
As the Maldives is a signatory to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), the Act prohibits chemical weapons in accordance with the CWC, which prohibits the development, production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons and calls for the destruction of both the facilities used to produce chemical weapons and the weapons themselves.
The Act requires a “Chemical Weapons Unit” to be established by the relevant ministry to oversee the implementation of the Act. The Act details the powers and responsibilities of the Unit and mandates the Unit to draw up guidelines and policies outlined in the Act.
With the ratification of the Act, only parties licensed by the “Chemical Weapons Unit” will have the authority to import and export any chemicals that fall within the purview of the Act. The Act further defines the proper procedures for disposing of chemical weapons in the Maldives.
Violations of the Act may result in fines between MVR 500,000 and MVR 1,000,000 or imprisonment for five to twenty years.
