Fourth Amendment to the Presidential Elections Act of Maldives [Law No. 12/2008]

On 22 June 2023, the fourth amendment to the Presidential Elections Act of Maldives (Law No. 12/2008) was ratified.

The fourth amendment changes Section 5 (d) of the Presidential Elections Act of Maldives. Section 5 (d) governs the time frame within which candidates wishing to contest in the presidential elections of the Maldives can submit their applications to the Elections Commission of Maldives.

Before the amendment, the designated duration for application submission was set at a period of 10 days after the Elections Commission of Maldives publicly announced the commencement of the application process for those intending to run in the presidential elections.

However, with the fourth amendment, this time frame has been extended. The revised Section 5 (d) now mandates that candidates be provided at least 14 days to submit their applications to the Elections Commission of Maldives after the Elections Commission makes the public announcement that the opportunity to contest for the presidential elections is officially open.

The additional time granted to potential candidates can prove crucial in enabling a broader array of individuals to organize and prepare their candidacies adequately.
