Maldives and Cambodia exchange six key agreements, demonstrating a pivotal point of progress in bilateral relations between the two countries
The Maldives and Cambodia established diplomatic relations on September 21, 1995.
On 16 January 2023, leaders of the Republic of Maldives and the Kingdom of Cambodia signed six important agreements, marking a significant milestone.
The following six agreements were signed between the countries.
- Agreement on Visa Exemption for holders of diplomatic, official, and ordinary Passport;
- Agreement on Economic Cooperation;
- Memorandum of Understanding on Health Cooperation;
- Memorandum of Understanding on Tourism Cooperation;
- Memorandum of Understanding on Bilateral Consultations; and
- Memorandum of Understanding between the Maldives National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce.
The main purpose of the agreements are to achieve the following.
- Agreement on Visa Exemption for holders of diplomatic, official, and ordinary Passport: ease travel for holders of diplomatic, official, and ordinary passports of both the countries and strengthen the socio-economic relationship between the countries.
- Agreement on Economic Cooperation: enhance, advance and cultivate economic collaboration between the countries.
- Memorandum of Understanding on Health Cooperation: supporting the Maldives in enhancing healthcare facilities, training medical professionals, and implementing prevention and advocacy programs.
- Memorandum of Understanding on Tourism Cooperation: advertise tourism, provide training opportunities, further investments, and facilitate travel between the two countries.
- Memorandum of Understanding on Bilateral Consultations: invite discussions to build relationship between the countries in various fields.
- Memorandum of Understanding between the Maldives National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce: build trade relations, attract more investment, and promote enhanced cooperation in the industrial, business, and economic sectors of the countries.
